The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Jie in Chinese, is one of the most cherished traditional holidays in China. In 2026, it falls on June 19. This article gives you a short cultural background, explains our official holiday schedule, and reminds our ventilation duct customers about order planning.
The most widely known story behind the festival dates back over 2,000 years to the Warring States period. Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) was a beloved poet and loyal minister of the State of Chu. When he saw his kingdom fall to foreign invasion, he drowned himself in the Miluo River as an act of patriotic despair.
The local people, who deeply respected Qu Yuan, raced out in their boats to search for him. They threw sticky rice dumplings (now called zongzi) into the river to distract fish and evil spirits from his body. Over time, these acts of rescue and respect evolved into two core traditions: dragon boat racing and eating zongzi.
Other legends connect the festival to Wu Zixu (a military strategist) or Cao E (a filial daughter), but the story of Qu Yuan remains the most influential across China.
Beyond the legends, the Dragon Boat Festival also has ancient roots in health protection. The 5th lunar month was traditionally seen as a “poisonous” time, so people would hang calamus and mugwort leaves on doors, drink realgar wine, and wear fragrant sachets to drive away insects and diseases.
In 2009, the Dragon Boat Festival became the first Chinese festival to be inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
